ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday served notice on Shehryar Taseer, publisher of Daily Times to appear in person next week in a case relating to the inordinate delay in payment of staff salaries.
On October 17, the court ordered the newspaper’s management to clear off four months of outstanding pays. However, the managers did not do so.
Managing Director Kazim Khan told the court on Tuesday he had conveyed the court’s orders to his boss but being an employee himself, he could only do so much.
Justices Ijazul Hasan and Sajjad Ali heard the case.
The counsel for Daily Times sought two weeks time for the publisher to appear in court, but his request was turned down.
The paper has not disbursed salaries to staff since July.
Nearly a week following the October 17 court order, Daily Times terminated 11 staffers in Islamabad whose salaries it is required to pay. However, the managers withdrew their decision and reinstated all employees on October 30.
